Inspired by the love of books. I outline my thought process and the background of this Lego sculpture design idea here.
Building a Love for Reading: “A Lego Sculpture of a Boy Lost in a Book”

Introduction
- Brief overview of this Lego sculpture project. Ever since my own kids were young, the love of checking out 30-40 books from our local public library every week was always a thing in our house. Since this time I have fondly supported the library and created unique works of art made of Lego Bricks and parts.
- Importance of promoting literacy and the love of reading. There are a number of studies that demonstrate the importance of reading. According to a study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to become lifelong readers compared to those who are not read to regularly.
- Purpose of the library display ‘the boy’ (Lego sculpture). The idea was to have a Lego sculpture prominently displayed to draw patrons to the display of literary books surrounding the sculpture.
Unveiling the Lego Sculpture

- Description of the Lego sculpture of a boy reading. Simple red lego brick design. When creating these displays I start with an idea, and start building.
- Materials used and construction process: Paper, pencil, Red lego bricks in various sizes. The one piece that is critical with Lego sculptures is the 2×2 corner brick.
- Dimensions and visual details of the sculpture.

Capturing the Essence of Reading
- Explanation of the boy’s posture and expression conveying immersion in the book. I kept the design simple and one color. I did not want to distract away from the overall purpose of the display.
- Symbolism behind the Lego sculpture representing the joy of reading. Everyone loves Lego and can relate on some level. My designs generally draw a good crowd and many children and adults will navigate over to the displays and take pictures.
- Connection to the theme of literacy and education. The sculpture was designed to connect and reconnect the reader to something fun and something they know – Lego.
Promoting Literacy Through Creativity
- Discussion on the role of art and creativity in promoting literacy. There are a number of ways art plays a key role. I have seen magic acts, special music guests, cartoon artists, authors all provide free workshops at libraries to promote books and reading.
- Importance of engaging children in interactive and visually appealing learning experiences.
- Benefits of using Lego as a medium for educational displays.

Bringing Stories to Life
- Exploration of the Lego library display as a dynamic storytelling platform. I generally get a lot of patrons take photos and enjoying the Lego Sculptures.
- Incorporation of additional Lego elements to create a vibrant and interactive reading environment.
- Encouraging imagination and exploration through play-based learning.
Inspiring Future Readers
- Reflection on the impact of the Lego sculpture on viewers, particularly children.
- Encouragement for visitors to explore the world of books and foster a lifelong love of reading.
- Invitation to engage with the Lego library display and share in the joy of storytelling.
Conclusion
- Recap of the significance of the Lego sculpture in promoting literacy and the love of reading. It doesnt always take a large display piece to make a difference. Sometimes something as small as this Lego Sculpture can draw crowds.
- Closing remarks on the power of creativity and imagination to inspire learning and exploration.
